I always try to be nice to people when I travel, because I never know when I will need kindness in return.
In July of 1998 I met a 16 year old girl from Turkey during my 8 hour layover at Frankfurt airport. A family friend who works at the airport was supposed to keep her company for her 6 hour layover, but the person never showed up and she was afraid.
I told her not to worry and that I will take care of her. She had no money on her. I bought her some food and we went for coffee at one of the other restaurants. We took photos in one of the photo booths but it has deteriorated over the years, and you can’t make out who is in the picture. I know, sad!
I also purchased a phone card so she could call her mom to tell her that she was okay. The mom became hysterical because her daughter was with a strange woman and not the family friend(which is understandable). She calmed her mom down and explained that she is still inside the airport, waiting close to her departure gate. We took turns sleeping and we talked a lot.
When her flight was boarding, I walked her to her gate and we hugged each other goodbye.
I made sure she was safe while waiting for her to get her boarding pass scanned by the agent. She waved and I watched her board her plane. That was the last time I saw her. I lost her contact info and I don’t even remember her name.
Hopefully this post will be shared all over the world, she will read this, and remember me.
